High Risk Health & Harm Reduction

In this class, I worked on a group project about creating a harm reduction program for sex workers at risk for STIs and violence. I learned how stigma, poverty, and lack of healthcare access increase health risks and why harm reduction is important in public health.

 

This project helped me improve my research skills by using credible sources like the CDC and WHO. It also strengthened my teamwork and communication skills when organizing and presenting my ideas in a professional report.

Health Policy

In this class, I worked on a group project analyzing the opioid epidemic and its impact on pregnant mothers. I focused on understanding how social, economic, political, legal, and practical factors influence this public health issue.

 

Through this assignment, I learned how complex public health policy is and how different stakeholders, such as healthcare providers, government agencies, and patients, influence decisions. I also improved my research skills by using credible sources like the CDC, ACOG, and SAMHSA to support our analysis.

 

This project helped me strengthen my teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills. It was meaningful because it showed me how public health policies can directly impact maternal and infant health outcomes, and it increased my interest in working in healthcare and policy related fields.

Influencing Public Health

In my Influencing Public Health course, I completed a P.E.R.I.E project on opioid use disorder. In this assignment, I researched the problem of opioid misuse, including overdose rates, who is most affected, and what causes it, such as mental health issues and overprescribing. I chose two slution to prevent this which us by using Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT/MOUD) and academic detailing.

 

From this project, I learned how serious public health problems are studied using data and research. I also learned that public health solutions are not just about treatment, but also about prevention, education, and policy. This was meaningful to me because it helped me understand how big health issues affect communities and how they can be addressed in different ways.

Health Administration Ethic

In this class, I learned about different ethical theories such as Kant’s deontology, Mill’s utilitarianism, Aristotle’s virtue ethics, and Rawls’ theory of justice. Each theory explains how people make moral decisions in different ways. Kant focuses on following rules and doing what is right based on duty, Mill focuses on the outcomes and what brings the most good, Aristotle focuses on building good character through habits, and Rawls focuses on fairness and equal treatment in society.

 

This was meaningful to me because it showed me that there is not always one clear answer when making ethical decisions. Different situations can be viewed in different ways. 

 

This knowledge is helpful in healthcare because it can guide decision-making when working with patients, especially when balancing rules, fairness, and what is best for the patient. It is also useful in everyday life because it helps me think more carefully about my choices, consider other people’s perspectives, and make fair and responsible decisions.
